Three things to know before renting on any island
Left-side driving, the five-minute version
If you learned on the right, the first hour on a left-driving island is the risky one. The wheel is usually on the right, the gear stick in your left hand, and your instinct at every junction is wrong. Three habits fix it. Say "left side, left side" out loud when you pull out of any car park or gas station, follow the car in front until the pattern sticks, and put a passenger on lookout duty at roundabouts. By day two it feels normal. Rental cars on left-driving islands are usually automatics, which removes half the problem.

Which Caribbean islands drive on the left?
Most current and former British territories drive on the left, including Jamaica, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands (Tortola), Anguilla, Antigua, St. Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Turks & Caicos, and the US Virgin Islands. Islands with Dutch, French, Spanish or US mainland heritage, such as Aruba, Sint Maarten, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, drive on the right. Check the table above for each island we cover.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in the Caribbean?
Usually not. Most islands accept a valid US, Canadian, UK or EU license for tourist rentals. An IDP becomes useful when your license is in a non-Latin script, and a few islands sell their own temporary visitor permit instead. Each island page lists the exact requirement.
