Do I need an International Driving Permit for Antigua?
No. An IDP does not replace Antigua's own requirement. Every visitor buys a temporary local driving permit (US$20 / EC$50) at the rental desk when you show a valid home-country license. An IDP only helps if it translates a non-Latin-script license.
Can I rent a car at V.C. Bird International Airport?
Yes. Most local companies meet you just outside arrivals or run a short shuttle to a nearby lot, and pickup takes 10 to 20 minutes. Share your flight number so they can track delays, and arrange after-hours pickup in advance.
Can cruise passengers rent a car for one day in Antigua?
Absolutely. Companies deliver to the Heritage Quay and Nevis Street cruise piers in St. John's, a short walk from the ships. A compact handles a one-day beach-and-town loop, just be back at the pier at least an hour before your all-aboard.
What if my flight or cruise is delayed?
Give your flight number when you book so the company can track it. If a ship is running late, message the rental company through Customs Breeze, most will hold the car and adjust the pickup time at no extra charge.
Is driving in Antigua difficult?
It's very manageable. Speeds are low, distances short, and most visitors are comfortable within the first mile. The things to watch are potholes, roaming animals and unlit back roads at night, not heavy traffic.
Which side of the road does Antigua drive on, and are the roads paved?
You drive on the left in a right-hand-drive car, taking roundabouts clockwise. Main roads between the towns are paved (if unmarked), but the lanes out to east-coast beaches turn to dirt, where an SUV earns its keep.
Are automatic cars available in Antigua?
Yes, but many economy cars in Antigua are manual. If you only drive automatic, reserve early, automatics are the first to sell out, especially in cruise season and over the winter peak.
How much is the security deposit?
Expect a hold of US$500 to US$1,500 on a major credit card in the main driver's name, depending on the vehicle and whether you buy CDW. Debit cards are rarely accepted for the hold, so bring a credit card.
Do I need insurance or CDW in Antigua?
Third-party liability is legally required and usually in the rate. Collision Damage Waiver is optional but recommended on Antigua's rough roads (about US$10 to US$30 a day). Note that tyres and undercarriage are usually excluded either way.
Can I pay with a debit card?
Sometimes for the rental itself, but rarely for the security-deposit hold. Plan to bring a credit card in the main driver's name to cover the deposit, then settle the balance however the company prefers.
Is parking free at the beaches?
Yes, almost every beach, Dickenson Bay, Ffryes, Darkwood, Half Moon Bay, has a free car park. Parking is tighter downtown in St. John's, where you should use the official car parks near Heritage Quay and the market.
Do rentals include unlimited mileage?
On an island just 108 square miles, mileage is almost always unlimited, you couldn't rack up much anyway. It's noted on each vehicle page, so confirm there if it matters to you.
Is roadside assistance included?
Most local companies run their own roadside assistance and will swap the vehicle if needed. Save the 24-hour number they give you at pickup, and note the nearest village when you call, mile markers are rare.
Can I add another driver?
Yes, usually for a small fee. Any additional driver must show a valid license and buy their own US$20 temporary permit. An unlisted driver at the wheel can void your insurance, so add them at the desk.
Can I take the rental car to Barbuda?
No. Rental cars stay on Antigua. Take the ferry or a short flight to Barbuda, and arrange local transport, a taxi, guided tour or a separate Barbuda rental, once you're there.
What's the cheapest time of year to rent in Antigua?
Low season, roughly May to November, brings the softest rates, with a chance of a passing shower. Rates and demand peak over Christmas and New Year, Antigua Sailing Week and Carnival, so book those windows well ahead.
What are the minimum and maximum driver ages?
